The Chairman NHC and the Chief Hydrographer of the Sri Lanka Navy attended meeting at office of the Deputy Minister of Defence
The Chairman of the National Hydrographic Council (NHC) and the Chief Hydrographer of the Sri Lanka Navy participated a meeting at the office of the Deputy Minister of Defence on 31st December 2024. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) and attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and representatives from the Sri Lanka National Hydrographic Office (SLNHO). The discussion focused on the critical needs to elevate the operational efficiency of the SLNHO.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the NHC presented a detailed overview of the importance of hydrography for national security, maritime safety and economic benefits. He also outlined SLNHO’s progress in chart production and available opportunities on potential collaborations with the UK Hydrographic Office. Furthermore, he pointed out significant challenges such as budget constraints, training needs, capacity building and equipment shortages, emphasizing the necessity for international support to enhance SLNHO’s capabilities.
The Deputy Minister reaffirmed the Ministry's dedication to supporting the SLNHO under the National Hydrography Act, No.7 of 2024, prioritizing hydrographic initiatives and the importance of efficient regulation of related activities to achieve national objectives.
